It seems reasonably clear to me from the description in the manual that (append 'a) is legal and evaluates to 'a. I guess the manual is just ambiguous enough to confuse people coming from other Lisps where things don't work this way, so a little tightening of the language is called for, but I don't think that there is any question about what the right thing is here. -- Scott
